MEDIA ALERT

TODAY, FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 25TH

ADELAIDE STUDENTS PLAN PROTEST AGAINST MORRISON’S GAS CASH GRAB

TODAY school students in Adelaide will rally as part of a day of action demanding PM Morrison rule out giving billions of Covid-19 recovery funds to gas.

The September 25th #FundOurFutureNotGas day of action is quickly becoming the most widespread day of action against gas in Australia’s history, with over 300 actions planned across the country. The day is being organised by the School Strike 4 Climate network, as well as First Nations communities, unions, and everyday Australians in response to leaked plans revealing that PM Morrison is considering giving billions of Covid-19 recovery funds to gas.

Subin Wright-Simon, year 10 student from Mt Barker Waldorf School said: “Students here in South Australia want Scott Morrison to invest Covid-19 recovery funds into renewable energy, creating thousands of jobs that would also help tackle climate change. Giving billions of taxpayer dollars to the polluting gas industry is clearly an irresponsible use of public funds.”

“The leaked gas plans come from the National Covid-19 Coordination Commission, a commission that is stacked with gas executives. Of course they’re trying to convince Scott Morrison to give billions of taxpayer dollars to their own industry. It’s appalling.”

“Companies like Origin, whose office we’ll be marching to, claim to be leaders in renewables, but at the same time are fracking for gas that pollutes the atmosphere and precious water. We stand in solidarity with Traditional Owners from Leigh Creek in SA, to the NT and across the whole country whose land and culture is threatened by gas fracking.”

Emilia Muriti, year 8 from Trinity College said: “South Australia has led the way with renewable energy, and we’re proud of it! We don’t need new gas when we can have cheap energy from the sun and wind, backed up by batteries.

“As young people we’re scared of the extreme heat, drought, and worsening fires that more fossil fuels will bring. That’s why we’re here to send a message to our politicians that we want them to fund our future, not gas.”

Media are invited to join the action for photo, video, and interviews:

DATE/TIME: 11:30am, 25 September

LOCATION: Hindmarsh Square, Adelaide

DETAILS: Students and supporters will gather at Hindmarsh Square to hear from speakers, then together will march to Origin Energy’s headquarters to protest their plans to frack the Northern Territory.
