MELBOURNE SCHOOL STRIKES TAKE GAS FIGHT ONLINE

SCHOOL STRIKES FOR CLIMATE saw 100,000 people take to the streets of Melbourne last year, but this year, Stage 4 lockdown restrictions will see students, indie bands and strikers taking powerful online action on 25 September to demand that the Federal Government fund their future, not the gas industry.

Victorian students will rally on Instagram this Friday 25 September with music from some of Melbourne’s top indie bands including Husky, live streamed Q&As on why gas is a bad bet for our economy and climate and a call to action for politicians to block the Federal Government handing taxpayer’s money to the gas industry.

St Kilda student Ella Simons, 14, said that Prime Minister Morrison needs to listen to young people’s concerns about the risks he is taking with their future by backing the polluting gas industry.

“Gas is a dangerous fossil fuel that’s driving climate change, and as a young person I’m worried about my future. When the Federal Government releases its Budget on 6 October, we need to make sure gas isn’t in it. Gas can’t be the solution, it isn’t the solution. We need a clean energy future and a safe climate, not more pollution.”

“We’re working closely with the music industry for our online Day of Action - Melbourne’s musicians have been hit hard by the lockdown, and want to see our government fund a recovery that prioritise a safe, sustainable future. We might not be able to hit the streets this year but we can still make our voices heard.”

Anjali Sharma, 16, one of the lead organisers of Friday’s Day of Action, said that the Federal Government’s lack of action on climate change was forcing young people to protest.

“As a young person, it is incredibly disheartening to see the Morrison government prepared to give millions to the gas industry when it is clear that the safe and smart solution is to invest in the renewable industry. Although the pandemic has brought the world to a halt, it certainly hasn’t brought the climate crisis to a halt and that is why we cannot stop protesting this and demanding that the government prioritise our futures over anything else.”

TheSeptember 25th: #FundOurFutureNotGas day of action is tipped to be Australia’s first national day of action against the gas industry, and one of the largest actions against gas undertaken in this country.
